The origin of the Mid-Autumn Festival

The fifteenth day of the eighth lunar month is the traditional Mid-Autumn Festival in China. The Mid-Autumn Festival is so named because it happens to be half of the three-autumn festival. There are different opinions about the origin of the Mid-Autumn Festival. According to expert research, the Mid-Autumn Festival takes shape the latest in the three traditional Chinese festivals-Spring Festival, Dragon Boat Festival and Mid-Autumn Festival. However, like other traditional festivals, the Mid-Autumn Festival also has a long source, and its history can be traced back to the ancient customs of worshipping the moon and autumn sacrifices.

There was a custom of offering sacrifices to the moon in ancient China. According to the "Zhou Li", there were activities of "Mid-Autumn Night to welcome the cold" and "Autumn Equinox Evening Moon (Worshiping Moon)" in the Zhou Dynasty. In mid-August of the lunar calendar, it was the harvest of autumn grains. On this occasion, people held a series of ceremonies and celebrations in order to thank the gods for their protection, called "Autumn News". During the Mid-Autumn Festival, the temperature has not yet been cold, the sky is high and the air is refreshing, and the moon is in the middle of the sky. It is the best time to watch the moon. Therefore, the components of the sacrifice to the moon were gradually replaced by the appreciation of the moon, and the color of the sacrifice gradually faded, but this festival continued and was given a new meaning.

During the evolution of the Mid-Autumn Festival, the ancient etiquette and customs, many myths and legends and many other factors in Chinese traditional culture have been combined, and finally formed an important festival with rich connotations. The most famous of these are a series of myths surrounding the Moon Palace, such as Chang'e Flying to the Moon, Wu Gang's Path to the Osmanthus, Emperor Tang Ming's Visit to the Moon Palace, etc. They put a colorful neon-like mysterious and gorgeous halo on the Moon Palace, making it full of romance. The custom of admiring the moon and drinking on the Mid-Autumn Festival in the Tang Dynasty has become quite popular. From the many verses describing Mid-Autumn Festival that have been handed down, we can see that the myths such as Chang'e's Flying to the Moon have been linked to the Mid-Autumn Festival. In the early years of the Tang Dynasty, the Mid-Autumn Festival may have become a fixed festival. However, at that time, the Mid-Autumn Festival seemed to focus on admiring the moon and playing the moon, and it had not been widely popular among the people.

The official formation of the Mid-Autumn Festival, especially popular among the people, should be a matter of Song Dynasty. In the Northern Song Dynasty, August 15 was officially designated as the Mid-Autumn Festival, and seasonal foods such as "small cakes like chewing the moon, with crisp and sweet" appeared. Festival activities such as moon watching, moon cakes, osmanthus appreciation, and tide watching became popular. During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, the Mid-Autumn Festival began to be as famous as the New Year's Day, becoming the second largest traditional festival in China after the Spring Festival. Every Mid-Autumn Festival, each family must set up a "moon light position", prepare melon and fruit moon cakes, and "pay homage to the moon offerings". Moonlight paper is sold in the market, with pictures of the moon god and jade rabbit pounding medicine on it. After the sacrifice of the moon, the moonlight paper is burned, and the fruit cakes offered are distributed to every member of the family. The Mid-Autumn Festival is a day for family reunion. People give moon cakes to each other to express their good wishes. Many people also hold banquets to admire the moon.

Since the Ming and Qing Dynasties, the Mid-Autumn Festival has increasingly occupied an important position in people's lives. It has gradually spread not only throughout the country, but also in many ethnic minorities in China and Southeast Asia. On the basis of activities such as watching the moon and eating moon cakes, various localities have gradually developed colorful festivals such as "selling the rabbit", "Mid-Autumn Tree", "Fire Dragon Dance" and "Walking the Moon", making the Mid-Autumn Festival a traditional festival in China. It has more cultural connotations and is more fascinating.
